“It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience.” – Julius Caesar

First off, there is a graphic image below.  If you are squeamish than please do not scroll down.   Sitting in the Emergency room of Hobart hospital on a Friday night is not something I would recommend to anyone.  A few hours ago I was bitten badly on my hand by my pup George.   Read more about “It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience.” – Julius Caesar[…]

“I am fond of pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals.” – Winston Churchill

Several years ago Kitty and I found ourselves owning two pigs.  It was a bit of an accident as to how we came to own these two.  I was keen on getting into Rabbit breeding for meat and to this end I had constructed a rabbit enclosure adjacent to my chicken run.  It would have Read more about “I am fond of pigs. “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.” – Albert Einstein

Why I prepare part 3 Preparing does not mean that you are looking forward to disaster, it means you have enough foresight to realise that things can sometimes go wrong.  As a family we started our preparation with plans for evacuation should a bushfire threaten our home.  Due to the severity and frequency of bushfires Read more about “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. “I believe the world is one big family, and we need to help each other.” – Jet Li

Why I prepare part 2 As I mentioned earlier, when examining history it should be obvious that disasters occur.  These can range from the small, such as a power outage or a tree falling across your road, to a hurricane or a global pandemic.  The adage that “anything that can go wrong, will go wrong” Read more about “I believe the world is one big family, and we need to help each other.” – Jet Li[…]

“Family is not an important thing. It’s everything.” – Michael J. Fox

I have written a short (1500 word) essay on preparing as a means to explain to my friends and family my thoughts on this topic.  I was having difficulty explaining my views on the importance of preparing to people who asked, and I felt that not being able to put my thoughts into words did Read more about “Family is not an important thing. “Seven out of 10 Americans are one paycheck away from being homeless.” – Pras Michel

The Zero Hedge website has a very confronting article about the effect of poverty on people in America.  Just because it is happening to people over there, don’t think that it couldn’t happen here in Australia. http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-04-12/guest-post-tunnel-people-live-under-streets-america I find this so shocking that it is hard to comprehend.  The terrible existence these people have to Read more about “Seven out of 10 Americans are one paycheck away from being homeless.” – Pras Michel[…]

“Cultivation to the mind is as necessary as food to the body.” – Marcus Tullius Cicero

I checked my compost pile this morning and I was disappointed that there was so little activity going on under the tarp.  Much of the pile was cold, with small areas of 30 degree warmth.  I am doing something wrong and I need to work it out. I will post more about this later.   Read more about “Cultivation to the mind is as necessary as food to the body.” – Marcus Tullius Cicero[…]

“It’s not the soil itself – it’s the soil life that is the most important element” – Geoff Lawton

I have realised that I have accidentally neglected mentioning that the system I am using for compost creation I learned from Geoff Lawton. The video below is a trailer from Geoff’s Soils DVD. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ic6n8i6cuHA] I have attempted to make compost previously and I have never been happy with the results. “Would you like to know more…?” – Starship Troopers

I checked the compost pile yesturday to do the last turning before the end of the 4 week period.  The pile was cold to the touch.  This is evidence that the compost stopped being processed sometime within the last few days.  I went through the pile and discovered that although there is significant amounts of Read more about “Would you like to know more…?” – Starship Troopers[…]
